Slice of a Nautilus

from $40.00

24×30” Watercolor painting on watercolor paper - 2000.

Shells have always been among my favorite things even since I was a child collecting them along the beaches of California and Baja Mexico. One shell that has always been especially intriguing to me is the Chambered Nautilus (Nautilus Pompilius), which is amazingly beautiful, but also because of how it is formed by the Nautilus outgrowing it's existing chamber and creating a larger one, and then a larger...never shrinking but back but always growing. Always expanding. The spiritual meanings abound due to it's "infinite" design, with no final chamber. It is also the symbol of proportional perfection, the geometric "Golden Spiral!"
